Have a short city break or a longer holiday exploring the Turku region with hundreds of free events and beautiful islands by the sea. The Capital of Culture year 2011 is one of the largest efforts for Finland’s culture in decades. There is something for the whole family to enjoy. See Turku as never before!

Loistokari in Turku

Prices from £390/person in a shared double room

It is easy to walk around the city centre. The market squares and the market hall are favourites with Turku residents and visitors alike. The many boutiques and department stores attract people to Turku’s shopping streets, and there are restaurants to cater for every taste. The floating River Aura boat restaurants are open all summer.

Turku is a fascinating combination of old and new. The Cathedral was inaugurated in 1300 and the handsome castle, now with an excellent museum, dates back to 1280s. The wooden, stunningly beautiful St Henrik’s Ecumenical Art Chapel is the best example of the latest Finnish church architecture.

Turku is also very near to Naantali with its narrow streets and wooden houses, the Moominworld and the relaxing Naantali Spa. So you can combine a cultural and a family holiday in Turku and its neighbourhood. Ask about hotel packages or cottage hire in the region.

Package prices:

from £390/person for 3 nights sharing a double room
from £492/person for 3 nights sharing in a single room

What is included in the price:

Return flights from London Heathrow to Turku

Accommodation in a city centre hotel for 3 nights including breakfast

You can also combine Turku with Helsinki, Stockholm or Tallinn, please ask for an offer.

Cultural events 2011

Turku wants to highlight the importance of culture to the well-being of people and the environment. There will be thousands of individual events during the year, and the majority of these are free.

This year’s main venue, Logomo, will present opera, art exhibitions, experimental art, public access football displays, musicals, as well as popular music. Logomo is an old engineering workshop, steeped in interesting railway history.

One of the key themes for the exhibition Fire! Fire! is the historical Great Fire of Turku in 1827. A miniature model of the city will use light and smoke effects to present how the fire took over the city, also allowing the visitor to try out the possibilities of city planning for saving the city.

Many will find it surprising that maybe the best known Finnish visual artist in the world today came from Kaarina, near Turku. Tom of Finland alias Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991) created a style that is easily recognisable and has influenced gay culture for decades. Maybe the best example of his influence is the way Freddie Mercury of Queen looked in his later years.

Only A Game? exhibition reflects the European passion for football. The exhibits include memorabilia, but also games and iPad applications to let the audience to interact. The exhibition runs until December and it is produced together with UEFA and opened by organisation’s Chairman Michel Platini.

The Middle Ages are back in town! This Medieval Market will grace the Old Great Square of Turku and its surrounding quarter on 30.6.-3.7.11. For four days, history comes alive in this authentic replica of a Medieval marketplace. A cavalcade of jesters and minstrels take visitors back in time.

Monday: Helsinki the Daughter of Baltic
Arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa airport and later on check in to your city centre hotel. Helsinki is easy to explore on foot as everything is within easy reach – it is a beautiful city on a human scale. There are dozens of museums and galleries, and for keen shoppers, Helsinki offers an interesting choice of design boutiques and open-air markets. Helsinki will be the Design Capital of the World in 2012.

Tuesday: Welcome to the imperial St. Petersburg
Board the super fast Allegro train in Helsinki and arrive to St. Petersburg at noon. After a transfer including a panoramic city tour it is time for a lunch at the hotel.

The rest of the day you can stroll along the famous, bustling avenue of Nevsky Prospekt, or just enjoy the sights of this beautiful city. Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703 as his capital with palaces, churches and cathedrals, river embankments and canals, handsome parks and dozens of bridges. St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia for over 200 years.

Wednesday: For art lovers
Have a good breakfast at the hotel, as you need energy for a comprehensive tour of The Hermitage, one of the greatest museums in the world.

The tour includes Old Masters, State Rooms in the Winter Palace, and the Impressionists’ Exhibition. The Hermitage has works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Renoir, Degas and Matisse. The collection of Spanish art can only be compared to Prado Museum in Madrid, and the French collection is the largest outside France.

Lunch is at a local downtown restaurant.

The afternoon visit takes you to the Yusupov Palace that saw some of the most dramatic events of the Russian history, including the murder of Grigory Rasputin.

Thursday: Splendour of the Imperial Palaces
Breakfast at the hotel.

Excursion to Pushkin, one of the former imperial summer residences, and a visit to the Catherine’s Palace. The town of Pushkin was originally called Tsarskoye Selo (Czar’s Village). The Empress Elizabeth had the original palace, named Catherine’s Palace, expanded and renovated in 1752. The work continued during the reign of Catherine the Great. The palace is a combination of white and gold, and has a huge ballroom and ornately decorated drawing rooms. The most famous of these is the Amber room, which was raided by the German’s during the war, and restored after its return to Russia.

A lunch at a local restaurant.

The afternoon excursion takes you to Peterhof, the magnificent summer residence of the czars by the Gulf of Finland. The palace was built in the 18th century, and has enormous gardens with dozens of beautiful fountains.

Friday: The Russian Rail Experience
The day starts with a breakfast, some free time and a transfer to the station. Train to Moscow in the afternoon, arriving in the evening.

Time to settle in the modern Russian capital and explore it independently, if you like.

Saturday: Historic Kremlin
Breakfast at hotel gives you energy for visits to the greatest sights in Moscow. Tour of the handsome Moscow metro ending at Kremlin.

The fortification has 19 towers and is surrounded by a wall. Kremlin area has several ancient cathedrals with colourful onion-shaped towers, some dating back to 15th century. The Assumption Cathedral was the main church for imperial Russia, and the czars were crowned there. The Annunciation Cathedral has a collection of ancient icons, including works by Andrei Rublev.

The lunch break at Manege shopping mall.

The walking tour around the Red Square takes you to the heart of Russia’s capital. The name “Red Square” is, in a way, a translation mistake: originally the Russian word “krasnaja” meant beautiful, but over the centuries the word’s meaning changed to “red”. This meant that also the name of the square changed.

The Lenin Mausoleum is situated in the centre of the square. The founder of the Soviet Union is buried in the mausoleum that is still visited by thousands of people every year. Kremlin has been the centre of power in Russia and the Soviet Union for centuries.

Sunday: The Capital of Russia
Start with a breakfast at the hotel before a panoramic city tour with a visit to the enormous white-stone Church of Christ Our Saviour whose golden dome dominates the Moscow’s city view.

The church was originally built to celebrate the victory over Napoleon’s army in 1812. The building work took decades and the church was inaugurated in 1883. Stalin wanted to replace the church with the Palace of the Soviets and it was blown up in 1931 to make space for the new monument. This plan was interrupted by the Second World War. The Russian Orthodox Church started to raise funds to re-build the church in 1990s, and the copy of the original church was opened in the year 2000.

After the lunch you can take an optional tour of Tretyakov Art Gallery with nearly 50,000 works of art. The Gallery’s collection consists entirely of Russian art and artists, ranging in date from the 11th to the early 20th century. The collection covers the history of art from early days to Soviet Realism and modernists such like Chagall and Malevich.

Transfer to the railway station for overnight train Tolstoy leaving at 22.50 for Helsinki.

Monday: Goodbye and see you again!
Arrival in Helsinki at 12.00. Unless you have taken optional extra nights in Helsinki it is time to say goodbye and take the evening flight home.

Stockholm

Stockholm is a picturesque city built on fourteen islands and you are never far from water. Stockholm is also a city of contrasts. Those who are attracted to history and medieval surroundings will find Gamla Stan – Stockholm’s old town – irresistible. Those who seek sleek Scandinavian style will be drawn to Södermalm’s chic design shops, bars and restaurants.

Helsinki

Helsinki also comes with its fair share of history and style and is an ideal short break destination – friendly, lively and welcoming. It is easy to explore on foot as everything is within easy reach – it is a beautiful city on a human scale. It is a city of bustling, colourful market squares and halls, of outdoor summer concerts and sports events, of seaside parks, of excellent cafes and restaurants catering for every taste and budget, and cutting-edge art in fine museums.

In fact, there is no shortage of things to do and see in either capital, and the sea route connecting them is plied by two of the most luxurious cruise ships sailing on the Baltic, the sister ships Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony.

At the heart of each of Silja’s flagships is the 460 ft (142 m) long glass-roofed Promenade, watched over on both sides from cabin windows. Lined by restaurants, bars, shops and boutiques, the Promenade is just like a elegant high street at sea. Cabins are available in several classes, from comfortable cabins for 2-4 people, to deluxe Commodore Class cabins. Most of the cabins have a window, with either a view over the Promenade or a sea view. See here the cabin descriptions.

Prices from £1129 per person
Period: all year round

Experience the imperial beauty and treasures of Czars’ Russia and enjoy the trendy design of the Finnish capital in one unforgettable holiday packed with art and culture. Explore these two beautiful cities by the Baltic now connected with a super fast Allegro train that has cut the journey time by half.

Example itinerary

Thursday - Helsinki, the daughter of Baltic
Arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa airport and later on check in to your city centre hotel. Helsinki is easy to explore on foot as everything is within easy reach – it is a beautiful city on a human scale. The architecture ranges from graceful neo-classical to art nouveau and modernism.

There are dozens of museums and galleries ranging from the outdoor museum of old Finnish buildings to the cutting edge modern art. For keen shoppers, Helsinki offers an interesting choice of design boutiques and open-air markets. For the year 2012 Helsinki has been chosen as the Design Capital of the World. There are also excellent restaurants using Finnish ingredients like reindeer, game, fish and berries.

Friday - Welcome to the imperial St. Petersburg
Board the Allegro train at 10.00 in Helsinki. After arriving to St. Petersburg at 14.30 it is time for a transfer and a short city tour featuring the main highlights of the imperial city. Lunch will be at the hotel.

Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703 as his capital. The city is majestic with palaces, cathedrals, river embankments and canals, handsome parks and dozens of bridges. In the evening, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the bustling avenue of Nevsky Prospekt, the city’s most famous street.

Saturday - For art lovers
Have a good breakfast at the hotel, as you need energy for a comprehensive tour of St. Petersburg’s treasures.

The Peter and Paul Fortress is one of the great landmarks of St. Petersburg. It was founded in 1703 on a small island in the River Neva to protect the town against Swedes. The fortress housed a part of the city’s garrison, and later served as a notorious political prison. Over the years, the residents included Dostoyevsky, Gorgy and Trotsky.

Visitors can admire the gilded spire of the Peter and Paul Cathedral that stands in the middle of the fortress. The cathedral is the highest building in the city, and on top of its spire stands a magnificent golden angel holding a cross. All Russian emperors and empresses from Peter the Great to Alexander III are buried in the cathedral. Other buildings in the fortress house the City History Museum and the Mint, one of the only two places in Russia where coins and medals are minted.

The Hermitage is one of the greatest museums in the world. The comprehensive tour includes Old Masters, State Rooms in the Winter Palace, and the Impressionists’ Exhibition. The Hermitage has works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Renoir, Degas and Matisse. The collection of Spanish art can only be compared to Prado Museum in Madrid, and the French collection is the largest outside France.

Lunch is at a local restaurant.

Sunday - Imperial Palaces and return to Helsinki
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning excursion to Pushkin, one of the former imperial summer residences, and a visit to the beautiful Catherine’s Palace.

Traditional Russian lunch at a local restaurant, and then a transfer to the railway station for the Allegro train. You will arrive back to Helsinki at 18.00.

Monday - Goodbye, Helsinki

If you have not booked an early return flight you will have the opportunity to further explore the delights of Helsinki. There are fabulous design shops, excellent restaurants and various museums and galleries. You can also book additional nights in Helsinki.
