Kakslauttanen Igloo Village

Prices from £859 per person
Period: January – April

Igloo village

Kakslauttanen Igloo Village is located high up above the Arctic Circle, in the north-east corner of Finnish Lapland. This secluded log cabin village is the ultimate location for an arctic romantic break. As a highlight of your stay, you will overnight in either a snow or glass igloo – both options provide an unforgettable experience!

Every winter several structures are built from ice and snow near the log cabin village: these are the Ice Gallery, the Bar made of Ice, the Ice Chapel and the World’s Largest Snow Restaurant. Every December, the best ice sculptors in the world come to Kakslauttanen to participate in the international ice-sculpting week which takes place at the Ice Gallery and Igloo Village; the creations remain on view during the rest of winter.

During your three-night stay at Kakslauttanen you can try exhilarating winter safaris by reindeer, husky, and snowmobile or take part in an ice/snow rally. The choice is yours!

Log cabins

All 31 high quality log cabins are located near the main restaurant and reception building, although they are sufficiently far apart from each other to ensure peace and tranquillity for every customer. Each cottage is very comfortable, and equipped with shower/toilet, kitchenette, own sauna and fireplace.

Snow igloos

The igloo village is located in close proximity to the log cabin area. In addition to a warm down sleeping bag, woollen socks and hood are also provided. Though temperatures outside may sink to below – 30 C the temperature inside the snow igloos constantly remain between -3 C and -6 C so that you will never feel cold. That’s a promise! The snow igloos are for 1-5 persons. Imagine yourself sleeping in an igloo made of snow: It is totally quiet and lights inside the ice illuminate the igloo.

After the night in an igloo it is time for a sauna. The saunas and showers next to the igloo village are open every morning. From the sauna it is also possible to dip to a hole in the ice in the river.

Glass igloos

It is also possible to stay in a glass igloo. The glass igloos have been built from a very special thermo glass. For this reason, the temperature inside an igloo remains constant at normal room temperature. This also prevents the glass from becoming frosted, hence keeping the view clear even when the temperature drops below -30C.

To optimise the comfort of the guest, these igloos come complete with a toilet and luxury beds. The glass igloos are for up to 2 persons. Every morning there is also a sauna and a possibility to swim in an ice hole nearby.

Day trip to Ice breaker Sampo, Kemi
The Sampo, the world’s only tourist icebreaker, operates on the northern Gulf from the middle of December to the end of April. After serving for thirty years as an icebreaker in Arctic waters, the vessel has been given a new, more fascinating task – to act as a base for ice adventurers.

The frozen Arctic landscape, the winter darkness, the crackling frost and the clear starry skies with their Aurora Borealis offer visitors a unique experience in the midst of untamed nature. In late winter the sun appears in all its glory, painting the landscape a dazzling white – freshness and warmth to invigorate the traveller.

Whole day excursion from Hotel & Igloo Village Kakslauttanen also includes a visit to see Santa Claus at the Santa Claus Village and the crossing of the Arctic Circle. Departure at 6.30 am from Kakslauttanen and return by 7 pm.

Ice & snow rally
Our guide will take you for a snowshoe trek to places in the village where the Northern Lights are most likely to be seen. You will experience the arctic nature, snow and frost while the guide tells you about the Northern Lights.
Duration: 2 hours

Reindeer safari
Reindeer safari will ease away all your stress as you peacefully travel through the forest pulled by your very own reindeer.

You are picked up by car from the hotel and driven to the reindeer farm where all necessary equipment will be provided. This safari requires no skills and the reindeer will do all the work for you as you comfortably relax in your own sleigh.

You can take a short safari lasting 2 hours including a short break for coffee or a longer one which lasts for 4 hours and includes a hot lunch in a reindeer herdsman’s hut. This safari gives you a wonderful opportunity to learn about the Sami people, the indigenous population of Lapland, their traditions and way of life.
